May 30th was made a holiday in 1868 to honor the memory of the brave men who fought and died in the civil war (1861-1865). Since then, however, this country has participated in other wars, and the soldiers and sailors that have died in these wars are also remembered on this day.
The day is observed with parades and ceremonies in which the veterans of recent wars participate. In some communities, the streets are decorated with banners, flags and streamers.
On this day, also, the President of the United States decorates the tomb of the “Unknown Soldier”, in the city of Washington which is the capital of the United States.
